Why do aerial work platforms 'lose connection' in winter?

The reason for aerial work platforms losing connection in winter is not just a technical issue; it is more due to the extremely low external temperatures, which can 'freeze' the aerial work platform. So how do we diagnose what problems the aerial work platform has? Let me explain what issues aerial work platforms are prone to in winter!

1. Oil viscosity issue: Due to the cold climate and low temperatures, the viscosity of the oil increases, leading to increased friction resistance in moving parts, reduced starting speed, and difficulty in starting.

2. Battery shrinkage issue: The capacity of the battery is also affected by temperature. In low winter temperatures, the battery capacity significantly decreases, further weakening the starting power and making it even harder to increase the starting speed.

3. Slow starting issue: Due to the reduced starting speed, the leakage of compressed air in the cylinder increases, and the heat dissipation from the cylinder walls also increases. This leads to a significant drop in the temperature and pressure of the air at the end of compression, prolonging the delay period for diesel ignition, and in severe cases, it may even lead to failure to ignite.

4. Diesel viscosity issue: In low-temperature environments, the viscosity of diesel also increases, directly affecting its injection speed. At the same time, the swirl speed, temperature, and pressure of the air at the end of compression are relatively low, which greatly reduces the atomization quality of the diesel injected into the cylinder. Diesel and air struggle to quickly form a good combustible gas, leading to starting difficulties and even failure to ignite.

1. Key elements for good starting performance

To ensure that aerial work platforms have excellent starting performance, it is crucial to meet the following conditions:

1. Sufficient starting speed: This is key to ensuring minimal gas leakage in the cylinder, low heat loss, and increased gas temperature and pressure at the end of compression. Generally, the starting speed should be maintained at over 100 RPM.

2. Good cylinder sealing: Good sealing performance reduces air leakage, ensuring that there is sufficient combustion temperature and pressure at the end of compression. The cylinder's compression pressure should not be lower than 80% of the standard value.

3. Proper engine clearance and lubrication: The clearance between the moving parts of the engine should be appropriate, and the lubrication system should be in good condition to ensure smooth starting.

4. Sufficient battery capacity: The battery should have enough starting capacity, and the starting circuit should be in normal technical condition to provide stable starting power.

5. Quality of fuel injection: The starting fuel quantity should meet the requirements, the injection quality should be good, and the injection advance angle should meet the requirements to ensure sufficient mixing of fuel and air.

6. Use compliant fuel: Choosing fuel that meets the requirements is an important part of ensuring stable engine starting performance.

2. Diagnosis and repair of crankshaft not rotating

When the aerial work platform starts, if the crankshaft cannot rotate, it may be due to the following mechanical faults:

1. Poor engagement between the starter and flywheel: Damage or wear caused by the gear ring colliding with the starter gear, requiring inspection and replacement of damaged parts.

2. Sticking cylinder: High engine temperature causes the piston rings to stick to the cylinder, requiring cooling, cleaning, and inspection of related parts.

3. Crankshaft seizure: Lubrication system failure or lack of oil leads to dry friction of sliding bearings, requiring inspection of the lubrication system and replacement of damaged parts.

4. Fuel pump plunger stuck: Inspection and cleaning of the fuel pump plunger are required.

3. Diagnosis when the crankshaft can rotate but cannot start

If the crankshaft can rotate but cannot start when the aerial work platform is started, and there is no smoke emitted from the exhaust pipe, it may be due to fuel system issues:

1. No fuel in the tank: Check the fuel tank and refill.

2. Clogged fuel filter or water separator: Clean or replace clogged parts.

3. Low-pressure fuel line not supplying fuel: Check the low-pressure fuel line and repair faults.

4. Fuel pump not pumping: Check the fuel pump and repair faults.

5. Air in the fuel line: Bleed the air from the fuel line.

6. Incorrect valve timing: Adjust the valve timing to ensure coordination between the valves and piston stroke.

4. Diagnosis of starting difficulties or failure to start with white smoke from the exhaust pipe

If the aerial work platform has starting difficulties or cannot start, and a large amount of white smoke is emitted from the exhaust pipe, it may be due to the following reasons:

1. Water in the diesel: Check the quality of the diesel and replace it.

2. Loose cylinder head bolts or blown cylinder gasket: Check and tighten the cylinder head bolts or replace the cylinder gasket.

3. Sand holes or cracks in the cylinder body or cylinder head: Check and repair the cylinder body or cylinder head.

5. Diagnosis of starting difficulties or failure to start with gray-white smoke from the exhaust pipe

If the aerial work platform has starting difficulties and emits a large amount of gray-white smoke from the exhaust pipe, it may be due to the following reasons:

1. Engine temperature too low: Preheat the engine to raise the temperature.

2. Poor atomization of the injector: Check and clean the injector.

3. Fuel supply timing too late: Adjust the fuel supply timing.

4. Insufficient fuel supply: Increase the fuel supply to ensure the mixture concentration is appropriate.

5. Excessive air leakage in the cylinder: Check and repair the cylinder air leakage issue.
